Mother’s Day began in the USA. It is on the second Sunday in May. It is a day to thank mothers. On that day, mothers usually receive flowers"and"cards. In the cards, children write “Thanks, Mum”, “To the best mother in the world”"and"so on.
Where did the idea for Mother’s Day come from? We should thank Miss Anna Jarvis. She had the idea of having such a day. Her mother died at 7 o’clock on May 9, 1905. On the same day in the following years, she invited some friends to a small memorial meeting. In 1907, it was held in the church on the day of her mother’s death.
Anna’s love for her mother moved a lot of people. Besides this, she also wrote letters to important people. She hoped there would be a national public day to thank all mothers. In 1913, the US government agreed that the second Sunday in May was Mother’s Day.
On Mother’s Day, to thank their mothers, children give gifts to them or the whole family goes on an outing. There is also Father’s Day in the USA. It’s on the third Sunday in June. People try to honour their fathers as well.
