The Cultural Differences Between the East and the West
People depend on their inner circle to look after each other. So the Chinese are often very willing to understand other people’s ups and downs, and they are willing to share. But Westerners don’t like sharing personal information. They consider it is impolite.
People in the West believe that time is money, so they value time, and they often make plans at fixed times; they have a good habit of keeping appointments. But Chinese people don’t pay attention to it. Westerners often feel uncomfortable about it.
Chinese people often praise others and play down themselves. They think that it is good manners. For example, when they are praised, people often say, “No, I am not. I just did what I should do.” But Westerners will always say “Thank you.” So people in China always think that Westerners are over-confident and prideful. Westerners think that the Chinese people are dishonest.
In China, people prefer colorful clothes and always wear the same clothes in different places, but in Western countries, people dress according to where they are.
