Li Shizhen was a Chinese medical scientist in Ming period. He was born 500 years ago, on July 3rd, 1518. Li’s grandfather and father hoped he could get a government position, but he failed the national exam three times. Then he turned to medicine. At the age of 38, he cured the son of the prince of Chu, and became official in the prince palace. In his government position, Li read lots of medical books, and found many mistakes in some of them. This gave him the idea of writing a book, providing correct and clear information on medicine. He then spent 27 years writing his world-famous scientific book, Bencao Gangmu. The book introduced more than 1,800 Chinese medical plants. It also described the type, form, taste, nature and use of 1,094 of them. It has been the most important work of Chinese traditional medicine in history.
